This Year's Model Updates:

For 2006, the MX-5 gets its first top-to-bottom redesign since its launch in 1989. The roadster gains a roomier cockpit but still tips the scales at under 2,500 pounds. Beneath the hood, the MX-5 benefits from an all-new 170-horsepower, 2.0-liter engine. Side-impact airbags and ABS are now standard across all trims.

Pros:
  • Huge fun factor, precise steering and handling, low base price, economical to operate.
Cons:
  • A few questionable interior plastics, still snug for large adults.

My 06 Mazda MX5 is a wonderful little car - "fun to drive" was a phrase I never understood until getting this car. Its great ... but: 1) having the cup holders on the doors is a dumb idea. They rub your thigh and if you ever put a drink there and forget when you open/close the door youll have the drink flying all over (unless its a NASA designed sealed cup). 2) The electronic keys are a disaster: Ive had to change batteries four times in 2 years. One of my keys gave out entirely and it was replaced (warranty, thankfully). They tell me the keys "communicate" with my BlackBerry, so they constantly run the battery down. Really? In any case, this flaw is a real bummer!

This car is awesome. I dont like driving, but this car is so fun, I cant help but smile when Im behind the wheel. I live in Phoenix, and the top is always down. Ive driven the car exactly once with the top up and thats because it was raining. No rain? No top! I look forward to my commute every day. This car makes going to work fun. Fun, fast, handles great. Its so hot in Phoenix, Im getting a great tan just driving to and from work. Best buy for the money. Ive never been happier with a car purchase. 110 degrees outside, I drive with the top down, and the A/C off because its the best feeling in the world. Safer than a motorcycle, but just as fun to drive.

I currently own a 2006 Miata Sport and it is my 5th one. I bought first year model they came out and they are unbeatable for the money. All the ones Ive had average close to 30mpg and I have spent $0 dollars on any of them. Theyre the most reliable and dependable cars Ive ever owned. Ive had the Honda S2000 and its expensive to upkeep..preminum gas, tires are staggered so you cant rotate and insurance is outrageous.. the shear fun factor alone this these Miatas is priceless.ive owned every convertible on the market ( or pretty close) and I always come back to the Miata.Only issue Ive ever had with these cars is the rain drains clogging up and water standing in the passenger floorboard

I bought the MX-5 GT 6-speed at the end of March 2006. It is the True Red color and I have lost track of how many people have stopped me to ask questions about the car and in some cases asked if they could drive it. Obviously, my answer was no. The car has been exactly as described and lived up to all the pre-launch euphoria. Its impossible to overstate the "fun" factor of driving this car top-down. Outstanding!

Love my car. Continuous problems with the roof leaking and flooding inside the car behind the seats. The vents keep clogging where water runs off. Problem every rain season. Any suggestions?

Handles like a real sports car. Has plenty of usable horsepower for the road. Steering is precise. In fact when I drive my other car or my wifes car it feels like something is wrong with the steering on those cars. Its just that the MX-5 is so precise you think where you want to go and it is there. Run Flat tires initially were a bit hard, but I either have gotten use to them after 300 miles or they are broken in. You find yourself wanting to drive this car all the time. Plenty of trunk space for a roadster and the Active Key system eliminates fumbling for your keys. Mazda has a hit. I considered the S2000, Porsche Boxter, SLK350 and the Z4. For my money the 06 MX-5 wins hands down.

This is a real sports car -- no leather, no wood, no fancy gizmos, no navigation system, and no ashtray. Its quick but not fast, and it handles like its on rails. You feel like youre going much faster than you really are because youre sitting low and because of the exhaust note. It also gets great gas mileage. Theres enough room in the trunk for a weekend getaway for two -- but thats about it. The top does work with one hand (though I have long arms) and makes one wonder about car companies bragging about how quickly their power tops fold up. If the journey is more important than the destination, this is the car for you.

  • My 3rd and best Miata, um...MX-5 - 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata

This car is simply amazing. I have owned two Miatas (a 95 M and the 99 10AE) making this my third. It is great! The ride is better, the performance is better, the steering wheel even tilts now! I look forward to every morning so I can get up and drive.

  • MX5 Great Value - 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The MX5 is a feature packed well engineered roadster. Probably one of the best values on the market. The engine and suspension of the new Miata are more sophisticated, but leave you wanting a more sports car like feel. The engine while strong feels and sounds like a boring sedan. Suspension is incredibly supple, but is too soft and leads to ridiculous levels of body roll in corners. The MX5 has great options and features for a car that sells under $25K. My car with dynamic stability control, LSD, traction control, Bilstein suspension, Bose stereo, side airbags, leather interior, 17" wheels -- was $24K. The MX5 also has one of the easiest to use convertible tops ever!
